Squadron. This Squadron was involved in the conflict from the begining. It was based in PAF Peshawar, it remained involved in the conflict until the end. It was the first one to be put on Air Defense Alert. Thousands of hours were spent on ADA. More than two thousand hours were spent flying on the western border patrols and CAPs. The unit also had to share defense duties of Kahuta nuclear site. The squadron twice intercepted intruding Afghan aircraft. First interception took place in March 1980, when a Russian Il-26 was intercepted. Second interception involved two MiG-21s, this took place during the month of February year 1986. None of the intercepts were ordered to engage much to the frustration of the pilots. This squadron came into being on June 15, 1956. It currently is equipped with F-7Ps. |
