PAKISTAN ARMY AVIATION
Pakistan Army is the most important of the three armed services of Pakistan. I was raised on the old British Indian traditions, but a new indigenous, Islamic and professional image has been adopted. Pakistan military has also ruled Pakistan for most of its existence, and it again took over the country after a text book coup in mid October, 1999. Rawalpindi X (10th) Corps These Corps have 21 division under their control two of them armoured. They also control eight infantry and two armoured divisions in reserve. The well trained army has been to war three times with India. It also has been utilized for internal security, in Sarhad during the early years of independence, in East Pakistan prior to seperation, in Baluchistan during the mid 70s, and in Sindh during the early 90s. After the war Pakistan aquired 24 Alouette IIIs from Aerospatiale of France, some of them were assembled by the Army itself. These Alouettes have been joined by several others from different sources, including sixSA 315B Lamas from Romania in 1987. The Lamas are used for high-altitute operations in Siachin and Karakoram. Medium-lift capability came with the procurement of US supplied six UH-1Hs as a gift for
in 1976 the Army aquired 32 Aerospatiale SA 330J Pumas, which formed two new squadrons, and boosted the assault and medium-lift capability.
In 1997 Pakistan doubled its Mil Mi-8 inventory by aquiring 12
more in the form of Mil Mi-17 from CIS, half of The Army also operates Rockwell Turbo Commander 690s, a sigle Commander MA Jetprop 840 for surveys. And a single McDonnell Douglas MD-500E for Inter-Service Intelligence. For Air defence Pakistan Army has four anti aircraft brigades, which are equipped with Bofors RB-77 SAMs, Stinger, and Arrow shoulder launched SAMs. Plus several connons and guns of varying sizes. |
